About this event
This is your invistation to discover the History of the German Church Liverpool Did you know the German Church Liverpool's remarkable story stretches back to the first half of the 19th century? Join us for a special multi-media talk celebrating 180 years of faith, resilience, and community as we share the fascinating history of the German Church in Liverpool. Discover how German-language services were held in the city even before our parish was officially founded in 1846. Learn about our vibrant early 20th-century congregation of around 1,000 members, making us one of the largest German-speaking communities in England outside London. Hear stories of perseverance through two World Wars, and how our current church building on Bedford Street South was built in 1959 after the original structure on the same site had to be taken down due to German bombing damage. From our distinctive tower and community hall added later, in 1964 and 1971 respectively, we have celebrated excursions, concerts, lantern parades, summer fetes and Christmas bazaars, making the German Church a key part cultural life in Liverpool for generations. Today we continue this legacy, embracing people from Merseyside, the Wirral, North Wales and Cheshire, hosting worship, play groups, café gatherings, and maintaining one of the best German children's book collections in Liverpool. Come raise a toast with us as we celebrate our rich history and presence within our beloved city of Liverpool.
